New premium snack service in Long haul Y?

  • Just flew to LAX this morning on flight 791 from YYZ..in Economy class

The service wasnt bad.. Had Breakfast (choice of omlete or french toast)..2 snack services(one a premimum service) ..

Premium servuce - right after the breakfast and prior to the showing of the movie, the FA went around and introduced the new Premium snack service.. She mentioned that this was a new service introduced by AC on long haul NA flights... Apparently this was the first flight with this service, and she was asking for comments from passengers..

Essentially, passenger can now pay for premium snacks. She had Dasani water, all sorts of candies (from gummi's, to fine chocolate, chips)... she mentioned that ice cream will be coming as well.. I didnt look at the prices.. but she did mention that there was a bundle package.. for $6 you can get Dasani water and 2 selections of candy..

    Interesting heh

  • Do you think I might get served a desent breakfast, lunch or brunch on my YYZ-YUL and YUL-YYZ flights @ 1pm and 12pm?

  • i never understand the "web site" said a meal on the plane is $5 so why be so CHEAP and cut out meal service.
I guess thats why I dont work for an airline http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

  • that's really sad when you have to pay in J class.. I can understand Y class.. but J?? Come on..

BTW.. from what I saw, there wasnt a lot of people buying the snacks..

I guess AC thinks that FA have nothing to do on long flights.. why not have them go around and sell recyled food... next you know, they will be selling shares in AC!!

  • I forgot to mention that they had this YYZ-YYC today as well. I was in J and wasn't offered a selection or even a chance to pay to buy if I wanted to.

I think they took a revenue lesson from Tango on this one. It was the first thing that came to mind when they announced it.

Maybe next we will get the option to pay a premium for the chicken over beef http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

    edited for clarity

  • "Raid the Larder" is a front cabin, J class service, and not offered in BA's back cabins. Thus you cannot compare the two concepts. This is an interesting concept for something further after the main meal service, and like alcoholic drinks, offers the customer choice for a price. Otherwise, I assume it is juice and pretzels for free.

  • After a little more thought on this a couple things come to mind:

*If I want good snacks I bring them already (mmmmm Recees Bites mmmmm)
    * How long before they start to eliminate dessert or shrink the meal portions?
*What is to stop the pretzel/nut snack service and replace it with payed snacks only?

I really do understand that this is a money maker and they need to examine their options at this point in time. I am at the same time very worried about the long term implications. "We never said snacks were Free" This isn't so far fetched when you consider AC charges for drinks on overseas flights in Y.

It's like KH saying a while back the ticket is only $1 but the surcharges are something like $1,900.

    Have a nice flight.

I don't consider Dasani a "premium beverage". It is nothing but municipal water from Brampton, ON. I saw this on a few of their early labels. They no longer tell you that, just "re-mineralized water".

You might get the option of a premium snack, but you won't get a meal. Flights twice as long as yours don't get meals at that time of day.

Unlimited drinks of course http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I will probably be to excited with writting a trip report and making photos to eat. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

  • Good move AC; I always dread the smell of that tinfoil wrapped crap they serve on the evening YYZ-YQR-YXE flight.

I'd be infinitely more pleased with being able to purchase some sort of ice cream treat (maybe a Drumstick or an Oreo sandwich), and some cashews. The Tango cashews are pretty good usually..

  • Change the premium snack to "Raid the Larder" like BA has, that's a great idea!
    But CHARGE?????? NOT!

  • Pay?

I'd bring the "premium" snack with me long before I'd buy it from AC.

Guess it won't be long before we have pay for the "premium" meal.

  • Maybe Tango leased the AC from AC http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

  • Sounds like you were on Tango. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

(except maybe the prices are higher!--perhaps that is why it is called the "premium" snack)

  • www.dasani.com (http://www.dasani.com)

Where does the water for DASANI come from?
To create DASANI, Coca-Cola bottlers start with the local water supply, which is then filtered for purity using a state-of-the-art process called reverse osmosis. The purified water is then enhanced with a special blend of minerals for a pure, fresh taste.

    Edited to add link

    YUCK

  • I predict the next step will be the division of the toilets into free and "premium-pay" - you bring your own paper for the free one. Second prediction, fee collection will be by bar code attached to your shoes at check-in. New slogan: Air Canada - the Highway 407 of the Air.

What about a separate J class for upgraders. We shall call it "U" class. Seats like business, drinks like biz, but food like economy. Think of the savings.
