The US Census Bureau recently published its most up-to-date economic
census of the business community, which you can find here:

2004 County Business Patterns
The second table on the page is titled, "Number of Establishments by
Employment-size class", and includes a column for the number of
businesses with 1,000 or more employees.
Note that on the left-hand side of the table, there is a button
labeled "Detail". Pressing this for any industry sector will take you
a table with the sector broken out in more detail, in case this is of
interest to you.
