Well, thanks to this wonderful forum, I was able to get my xbmc to connect to the internet. I see the RSS feeds, get weather and IMDB listings.

Before I move into the questions, let me tell you what my setup is:

My Xbox is connected to a wga11b linksys wireless adapter. I logged into the adapter via the software I found on the linksys web site. Originally it had its own IP address, but I changed it to DHCP as I thought this was the main problem. After doing so, got out to the internet so I was pleased.

I have a wrt54g linksys router with no encryption settings (basically Im flapping in the wind waiting for my neigbors to borrow my bandwidth). When I had the encryption setup, nothing worked at all.

So, there are a few issues I am still having that I can't seem to find fixes for.

    1. I can login via FlashFXP with no problems, but all I see is the C:/ directory (see screenshot below)...

    http://www.bdlab.com/xbmc/xboxftp.jpg

    2. when trying to stream something (video, for instance) I am able to see the shared directory on my PC via the "My Videos" directory on XBMC but when I get to the directory the video file is in, it prompts me for a password. I've tried all the default un:pw combinations and cannot get into the directory to stream.

    3. In order to get all this to work, I had to open up my wireless network without any encryption. I had to turn off my firewalls and disable encryption on my router. This concerns me because of obvious reasons.

Here are my IPconfig settings I took ealier, if this helps any...

  • Did you put the WEP key in the adapter with that software? The key should just be placed in the Wireless Adapter settings, I dont believe that it needs to be placed anywhere in XBMC if it is in the adapter.

Is the windows firewall and/or any other software firewall you may have on your home PC off?

    Yes and Yes :)

  • 1. can you manually change to the /e/ and /f/ if you have one? raw command "cwd /e/". you'll probably need to manually refresh the listing as well with f5. if so, go back to the root and add a new folder of E

2/3. the wireless encryption really should have nothing to do with your problem. its only link level encryption. the packets are only encrypted "in the air" between the host and the AP. you'll need to turn off the firewall or put in rules to allow the xbox access your pc.

and just to confirm, you're xbox has an ip of 192.168.1.x and is using the same exact gateway and dns as your pc, right?

    Thanks for the quick response...

    1. Not sure how to do that, even if I was able to. Sorry for my n00byness :confused2:

2/3. So, you're saying that as long as I have my firewall off or the xbox is enabled in there, I can setup my WEP encryption? This is good news. I think this is why I was having connection problems, the firewall, not the WEP. When doing so, is there a place in XBMC where I am supposed to put in a WEP password to access my wireless network?

And, lastly: Last night before I called it a night, the xbox showed the IP under "System Info" and today it doesn't  As far as I can remember, it was 192.168.1.1 and my router is the same, I just checked.

  • There is a program that linksys offers to change the settings/ security of the wga11b adapter. It's a small executable that searches the network for your adapter and allows you to set it up.

Did you put the WEP key in the adapter with that software? The key should just be placed in the Wireless Adapter settings, I dont believe that it needs to be placed anywhere in XBMC if it is in the adapter.

Now, it seems, I cant log into it via ftp at all. I checked the IP and password, but nothing.

Is the windows firewall and/or any other software firewall you may have on your home PC off?

  • The Xbox should be configured as following:

IP: 192.168.1.X - You dont want X to be a 1 because that is your router IP or the same as your Home computer which in the ipconfig log you posted was 102, but it may have changed since your using DHCP.

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 - Router IP.

DNS: 192.168.1.1 - If that doesn't get you to the internet you will have to get DNS information from your router Status or your ISP.

Also it looks with the wga11b you would set up the WEP encryption on the wga11b device itself. I looked on linksys's website and the user guide did not display any type of web console to log into to change settings on the adapter, but you should be able to run the softwar from the linksys website and it will allow you to put the WEP encryption settings there.

When you get that connected with the FlashFXP you can change the directory name by typing the /e/ or /f/ up in the address looking bar right above the directory listing that currently says /C/ in it.

ok, I did this the way you suggested. So far, I am still able to get out to the internet fine (I tested imdb and shoutcast)

  • shouldn't you also be able to hit the "Up One Directory" button? It's the one that looks like a folder with an up arrow on it immediately to the left of the address bar. That should take you to the root of the Xbox, where you will see all the partitions...

  • sleepyp, yes. but in some cases, they are actually missing from that root list. using the raw commands should always work provided the partition exists on the hard drive.
