Networking XBMC with Vista

  • I'm having some issues in trying to open a SMB connection to my shared folders on Vista. In testing, I've completely disabled the firewall, and disabled the IPsec service... I've created a user account with password to match the particular login name of choice, but no go...

I know there is SOME network connectivity, since if I activate the firewall I get an extremely long delay before a timeout/no response error occurs, when clicking on a share. However if I open port 445 on the "private firewall" and input the subnet of the xbox network interface, there is virtually no delay in the "can't connect" message coming up. Similarly disabling the firewall means no delay... (completely unprotected network).

With that information in mind, can anyone think of some other reason why SMB is non-responsive in Vista? It reeks of security issues... I just need some inspiration to dig deeper - and where...!

I've had no problems using Windows 2k, xp, and 2003 with xbmc... so perhaps something about Vista provides an extra barrier we haven't seen before.:sniffle:

  • Well for me it's working just fine with windows vista ultimate x64;

right click computer select properties you will get the System screen.

next to your computer name click change settings and you will get the system properties screen..

click network ID and you will get a screen that asks you wat network you want to set up.

select the top one a company network.

next screen select a network without a domain.

enter a networkname and press next.

then you'll have to reboot your computer.

When vista has rebooted you need to create an extra user acount.

open the startmenu en click on your user icon on the top.

on the new screen select manage a other acount.

then select create a new acount; I used xbox as acount name and password.

now al we have to do is share a folder.

go to the folder you want to share and select properties.

    now slect the tab sharing.

    now click the button sharing.....

    boot and open XBMC.

    in XBMC go to settings.

    now go to network.

select SMB and there you enter the username and pasword you used for the acount you created on the pc.

and now we are al done.

I hope you guys can use this have fun greetz Qballjos

  • I should have read further... as it does appear the latest build of xbmc works.. according to the comments here:
