  • My 16month old had an asthma attack this morning, at least that is what the ER is saying. She has had an upper respiratory infection for the past 2 days and woke up having a hard time breathing. She was really wheezy, using her accessory muscles to breath and had nasal flaring. I called 911 and had her seen at the ER. They did 4 albuterol treatments, gave her steroids and sent her home. Chest x-ray showed no signs of pneumonia. She's still not feeling great but much better, still wheezing tonight. She has only been sick one other time in January with pneumonia, no breathing issues in between then and now. Do you think they are jumping the gun giving her a dx of asthma? Personally, I think she is just wheezing from this infection.

  • no.. wife and children have it .. however some forms of child asthma goes away or not as sever as they get older .. better save than sorry ..

  • Carolyn, we generally do not diagnose children with asthma for children under age 3. The reasoning behind this is that the infant to child's airways are so small that wheezing generally occurs from multiple sources .. such as general respiratory infections ... the edema can cause wheezing ... and in no way can be identified as asthma with so many other possibilities ...

My hospital does not diagnose this .. we will generally use the term Wheezing Associated Respiratory Illness ....

I think they jumped the gun .. and that physician could never substantiate his diagnosis ...

  • I don't think it is asthma( Doctors told my mother that I had asthma, but it was just allergies)! My sister has had pneumonia twice, when she was one year old, and when she was twenty, it weakened her lungs and now she has to use a vaporizer...maybe one would help your daughter!! Good luck and God bless

  • You may be right, post-viral wheeze is common and can be "confused" with asthma.

What the docs usually think about in diagnosing childhood asthma, is a history of previous illness (pneumonia in Jan), plus current wheezyness with upper respiratory tract infections, trouble with recurrent infections or hard to get over infections, a history of ezcema/rhinitis, or family history of asthma/ezcema/rhinitis

The diagnostic test (pulmonary function testing) is unfortunately not an option at this age, as children under the age of 4 aren't able to follow the instructions to do an adequate test.

For now I would respect the diagnosis, if your kid truly doesn't have asthma then there wont be any more problems over time, and the diagnosis will change.

  • get a referral to a pulmonologist. understand the use of her meds -request a nebulizer for your home & learn CPR. your concerns need to be addressed by a medical profession -not Yahoo. see the American Lung Association for more information.
