I've heard that petsmart is the best, but now im starting to think petco. Im not going to buy my guinea pigs from there, im going to adopt them. But which is a better place to get them good food and other supplies? I want them to live as long as they can.
Like which place is a better place to give my money to??

Definitely pet-smart!! THE last time i went to petco, the lady who helped me look for a hamster seemed like she wanted to get outta there!! Anyways, she put them in a dirty jar with all the crap and stuff in theer!!

Okay, I'm being biased because I work for Petsmart.
But we do not take in pigs that are in any way unhealthy. So don't pay attention to PETA freaks about that. We have the right to reject an animal we predict is either under age to be sold, or if we suspect any illness. Half the time it is just ringworm, though.

Both of these places support animal abuse buy getting animals from BYBs and mass breeding mills, then selling them to impulse buyers.
They also both sell a wide range of products that are dangerous, potentially lethal, to the animals they are supposedly intended for.
I would suggest buying the stuff you need from a pet supply store (one that doesn't sell live animals) or online.

i choose petco. i hung out there as a small child and they were very hospitable, giving me presents on my birthday and whatnot. also they are cheaper and take care of their animals better.

Petsmart. Most Petco employs know very little about small animals and the supplies needed to take care of them becasue they are trained for the whole store not just one thing like pet care at Petsmart. Their animals also tend to be sick or dying at the several Petcos I've been in.
At Petsmart we are trained for one department unless they work in multiple areas. Pet care is where the small animals are and they will know more about the animal itself and the products for it.
Go to all the local pet shops, see which ones has the best and cleanest cages, and healthiest, friendliest animals. They best store varies from area to area, and locally owned businesses are often the best.
Petco. Petco is cheaper than Petsmart. Plus I don't like Petsmart sometimes they don't take care of there animals well, I saw a hamster with watery itchy eyes there :(

Petsmart has many outstanding charges for animal cruelty. But I think they are cheaper. Both do equal amounts for local shelters.
I use Petsmart. I am in there at least twice a week. I have a dog and two cats. Everyone has always been very helpful and friendly. I don't think that their prices are anymore than Petco.
Neither is a good place to get a pig. It is a well known fact that both places buy their piggies from breeding mills where the piggies are kept under the most cruel and inhumane conditions. Because they continue to sell pets rather than screening potential homes for adoption, they contribute to the gross overpopulation of these pocket pets.
Pet store piggies are also notorious for being sick, having parasites, or both. This is due to the crowded conditions under which they are bred, transported, and ultimately, housed at the pet store.
Rather, consider adopting your piggies from a local animal shelter or guinea pig rescue. There are many many great piggies out there that would just love nothing more than a stable, loving home. You may have to take a few more steps to do it this way, but you will be saving a life (or two) and contributing towards the solution rather than the problem.
I do not buy any supplies from places that sell animals. I buy my hay and pellets online, which are of better quality than anything that can be bought from a store shelf. PETCO. They have a larger section for rodents then petsmart.
Petsmart for sure. Their small animals may be more expensive but its to detur them to be fed as food. Also, they are cheaper then petco with most of their supplies, and if they arent, they will match the price.
As far as the animal abuse cases go, they both have a bad reputation, but then again, it all varies by store.
Think about this. petco donated supplies and food to help katrina victims, and got PLENTY of advertisement, Petsmart donated more then ten million dollars in a silent donation.
If I had to pick one, I would have to go with PetSmart. They seem to have a better selection for things for my cat, dogs, and gerbils.
But, I usually try to shop at Pet Supplies Plus. They are locally owned so the money goes back into the local economy. And I've also found that although they may not have the greatest selection when it comes to certain rodent products, they do carry the larges variety of super premium cat and dog foods I've ever seen. I'm so lucky to live close to a store that allows me to feed my pets the very best.
***Disclaimer*** Don't rely on the employees at any pet store to know anything. Do your own research first so you can go into the store with a good idea of what you're looking for.
Petsmart, by far. They take better care of the pets in their care, don't sell feeder rats and mice. . . You have to pay at least $15.00 per rat at petsmart. They are only $5.00 at Petco, sold as feeders for reptiles.
At least in Colorado Springs, where I live, the Petsmart stores seem to be much cleaner and to take better care of their pets than Petco.
