A Different SB-800 question

Welcome to:zjrp.com

  • I hope :-)

I am planning on getting the 105VR soon and will be needing a flash. I would love to buy the SB-600 because the obvious $100+ difference but am wondering about the -6 degree downward rotation of the SB-800.

I currently own the D50 and can not use the flash off camera. Is the downward rotation necessary or will the sb600 be just as capable of lighting my subjects as the sb800?

  • hmm holding sb800 while holding D50 + 105 VR 1:1.... i will try once i get lens and figure feel it. Shall order sb-800 tomorrow.. Thanks mate

  • why would this one not work to the "fullest extent" and what is the "fullest extent" that i would be missing?

    DONT TEASE ME!!!

  • No, the 800 is the only one that can command another flash/s. But if you shoot a D-70,D200,D80,D300 and maybe the D50 it's built in flash can command the others.

  • Or even like this ;)

What is this setup? i checked on B&H but couldn't find anything.

  • Nope it does not, but you can use the in camera flash on manual, lower the power. That way it will still trigger the 800.

I know that I would have kicked myself if i had gone with the 600.

  • Thats fine. You will love it! But let me warn you, it will become addicting...:D

John, you may know, Does the 600 have a mode like SU-4 on the 800?

  • Haha ok :D

  • Its called R1. Its nothing rare. Comes with two flashes as standard, but you can buy more. I think it costs about the same as 800, so much much better choice for macro imho. But i havent tried it yet, will buy it soon though.

It's pretty cool. I guess if you had 4 of the SB-R200 Wireless Remote Speedlights on there it would kind of function like a ring light also wouldn't it for portraits?

  • See, i only work during the summer.. So 1100 is really more than i can afford. But im young and can make mistakes.

My dad went out of town so i cant order the flash yet because nobody will be home to pick it up.

    Anybody else have any input?

  • yup, it may be a little wierd at first, but it will get easier. :D have fun with it...

Oh yea where you going to get it?

  • You can use the SB-800 off camera in the slave mode, you just cant use CLS. So that means you would have to adjust the power manually ( its really not hard )

I would say to get the 800 just because it is the best, and you can grow into it, and learn about the CLS. Then when you get addicted ( like me ) you can get a couple of 600's.

  • "...it will only send a pre-flash signal to fire the SB-600 and will not contribute to lighting the scene."

This is for bodies that have the Commander mode. As noted above, I overlooked he had the D50.

    Ahh ok.

But why spend money on an ebay trigger system, when the 800 has the slave capabilities built in? plus, then you get all the features, and more power, for about the same price? ( haven't looked at the price of ebay triggers lately )

  • Yea, i heard it allows the light to go through to set off the flash but does not allow enough visible light to make any change.

How would i strategically use the sb800 off camera for my macro shots? i dont plan on a tripod

  • Or even like this ;)

    http://www.livingroom.org.au/photolog/Nikon-speedlight-r1c1-r1-tm.jpg

    You go Val!!!! LOL

  • Possibly, but i have heard that the only cable i have heard that works to the fullest extent is the SC-28 cable. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/300477-REG/Nikon_4765_SC_28_TTL_Off_Camera_Shoe.html

  • Im convinced, will order the sb800 this weekend... Then i can save up for sb600 and use that wireless with the 800's commander ability. (though by then i hope to have a d200 or d80)

Since this thread is so hot, anyone know how the 105VR works out as a portrait lens vs the 85mm 1.8?

note - As of now, i use the 24mm reversed with the onboard flash. With this setup, my working distance is within an inch or two usually. The onboard flash with my custom milk jug diffuser does an excellent job lighting my subject at that short of working distance. Is the lens length the difference?
Are you sure you don't have those model numbers reversed?

B&H price for the SB-600 is $185USD and the SB-800 is $315USD. Wouldn't you be saving up for the more expensive one, or is that just me?

  • Or even like this ;)

  • i still don't understand all the hype around lighting, do the built in flashes suck that much?

I'm considering the SB-400, how much "worse" is it than the 600? It's only $100 on amazon. . ., is the extra $85 for the SB-600 worth it?

It all depends on what you want to do. The built in flash is very limited in range. The more you spend, the more range (power) and features in the flash. I went will the 800 for those reasons. Off camera flash gives you a lot more creative flexibility.

Yes............from my understanding. I dunno for camera bodies that don't have the Commander mode for off-camera flash, but with, I would not consider less. The SB-600 with the (adjustable) head at 90° is 4" (centerline) above the hotshoe (6.5" positioned straight up). You can adjust the head and zoom factor in multiple directions and outputs.

Do a keyword search on the forum on the shortcomings of the SB-400 to see for yourself.

  • No its correct, after i buy the sb-800 i can save up for the sb-600 for my future purchase if i wanted to use a flash off camera. I want the better one now :-).

  • LOL, im a poor college kid... Wont be home long enough to go shoot until spring. Something about walking around campus with $1500+ worth of equipment on me doesnt seem fitting?

  • I hope :-)

The down angle is for close subjects. The reason I like the SB-800 though is the higher power output. It also comes with gels and a hood style diffuser that I use very often. The diffuser would set you back $20 or more, so now you are down to a $80 difference and still less power and functions.

  • The D50 has no commander menu in camera if that is what you are speaking of.

@JIP, that would be nice down the road, but i want SB-800 because i do portraits as well. Actually going to do a friends engagement shoot when the seasons change so i figured might as well get a flash to cover all my needs for now... I heard the right diffuser can make it work with an onboard flash

You dont even need a diffuser for you in camera flash. Just lower the power of the in camera flash to its lowest setting.

Its good that your thinking wide angle...:sexywink:..... ( pun intended )

  • Yeah Scott, i didnt catch my error. i meant diffuser on the sb800

Of course by onboard flash i meant the SB-800 and not the actual onboard flash.. duh, psh, get with it man LOL

  • The D50 has no commander menu in camera if that is what you are speaking of.

    Missed that small detail.

The light stand and clamp are pretty handy for off camera use of the flash. You can do a search on the forum for ebay wireless triggers (~ $40) for off camera flash as well. I realize you have a budget, but food for thought. Even get the SB-600 with the extras and save up later for the 800. I have both flashes and the 600 is still pretty damn good.

About the only time I have my flash mounted on camera is when I'm at the animal shelter taking photos for their website (firing backwards). Then it's a matter of convenience.

    *Deposited 2 cents.*

Pre-flash only? I'm confused here, what are you talking about?
"...it will only send a pre-flash signal to fire the SB-600 and will not contribute to lighting the scene."

This is for bodies that have the Commander mode. As noted above, I overlooked he had the D50.

  • well, its the same price to get the package without the flash bracket and chord and then get that chord seperate so i will do that and make two orders

  • Pre-flash only? I'm confused here, what are you talking about?

  • No its correct, after i buy the sb-800 i can save up for the sb-600 for my future purchase if i wanted to use a flash off camera. I want the better one now :-).
You will LOVE it, and become addicted to lighting :D

  • So it is me!!! I went the other route. 600 then the 800.

Regardless, enjoy the SB-800 as it is a very good flash.

  • Its called R1. Its nothing rare. Comes with two flashes as standard, but you can buy more. I think it costs about the same as 800, so much much better choice for macro imho. But i havent tried it yet, will buy it soon though.

  • Those coins shall soon disappear when i pickup the 105VR. :-). Bah, its all in fun

    Thanks guys

  • Scott, so would the trick of putting exposed film over the flash to act as filter still trigger the flash and not effect the lighting of the subject? or will the low level of the flash be made unnoticable by the 800?

  • I will order from adorama. Honestly, im at college right now in the winter and have no use for SB800 right now but i figure if i order it now, i can have it when spring comes and i go home for my break.. Have planned to have the 105VR and SB800 as my welcoming gift to myself :-)

  • You can try it! I know that the 800's sensor is really sensitive, but im not sure... I may have to try that!

But, if you have your built in flash on the lowest power, and the 800 on a bit of a higher power combined with a higher shutter speed and aperture.

  • The SB-800 is an excellent flash with many capabilities and the ability to tilt slightly down is nice. But it won't be much good on camera for 1:1 as you will be very close to your subject and the flash isn't that effective that close.

The R1C1 would be a better choice. You could also look for a used SB-29 ringflash. I still use mine although I like the R1C1 better for many subjects.

    Obviously cost is an issue.

  • Aw cmon if you are going Nikon macro why not get the right flash....

  • Ahhh cool. Im still learning :)

  • Aw cmon if you are going Nikon macro why not get the right flash....
    True

However, with either the SB-600 or SB-800 and wanting to pre-flash only, have a look at this thread (http://thephotoforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103674&highlight=commander)- post #12.

Might I also suggest with either of the SB-'s, this Bogen light stand (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/512196-REG/Bogen_Manfrotto_001B_001B_3353_3373_Nano.html)and this clamp (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/298709-REG/Impact_3117_Umbrella_Bracket.html). It's a way to keep your hands on the camera. Just a thought.

  • so, after 46 responses i ordered the SB-600.... After talking with the guy at the local shop, neither one of us could come up with a good enough reason for me to grab the 800 over the 600 for what i wanted to do.

So i ordered that today + 4gb worth of memory for $130 less then i was going to spend on the sb800

  • Or if you want to keep the infrared focusing capapbilities then you could spring for the SB-29.

  • Thanks for quick response. So the downward tilt will help for my 1:1?? I think I am sold then. I would probably regret buying the sb600 and not spending the extra $100.

@Scott, the D50 does not have commander mode?

  • It shouldnt take that long to come!!!

is this the flash sync cable i need to get it off the cam?

Built in flashes dont suck, per say...

Its more a fact that being stuck with the on camera flash when you are trying to control the light in your pictures is very hard... Especially when you want to take your flash off camera... I haven't seen a built in flash that you can take off :greenpbl:

If your looking to boost your on camera's flash, then the 400 is great! But if your looking to take it off camera at all, you should consider the 600 or 800.

As far as the difference in the 600 and 800, its really what your ultimate plan is. If your plan is to have a multiple light setup, the you should have at least an 800 to control the 600's.

But if your want to start off camera with the 600, that's fine too, its just there are a few, slightly annoying limitations.

  • i think the extra 85 would be worth it...

but they are telling me an extra $100 is worth it not to get the sb-600... one must decide when to stop

  • I walk around my high school with 4000+ of equipment every day ... and its all mine, not the schools. ( i do yearbook and newspaper )

Its pretty stressfull... I can relate.

  • Use the provided diffuser, and you can just hold it with your hand. Thats what i do anywho.

  • Stranger, I don't think you would have gone wrong with either choice. However, now you have a few more coins in your pocket. Have fun!

  • I think that the SB-28 supports all the features of the flash. Not sure about the one in that package... But i dont know for sure at all...

  • Oh and I used all my money to get it... Most kids ask me if my parents got it all for me, but they didn't.

I also have 3 part time jobs... + all the photography jobs i do... and school

    I do to much.... :/
