This request might appear awkward to all of you, so take my apologies. I am forced to use the "old" XBMC 1.1.0 as otherwise my SMB-share doesn't work.
So, my request what is the best way to include as many of the features of the new release (supported codecs, skins, youtube, etc.) into the "old" release. Any help is highly appreciated!!!

You are better off trying to provide as much detail as possible about the SMB problems you have so that they can be fixed in the current release.

ah, you're using a lan attached NAS server. no wonder. they have been nothing but problems. one gets fixed, another breaks. here's what you gotta do...
find an old ethernet hub (yes, a hub, NOT a switch) and connect your NAS, your xbox, and a computer to it. run wireshark on the computer, be sure its in promisicuous mode. this will capture the problem in great detail. save the pcap file and attach it to the bug report.
and yes, you can have both installed at the same time. they wont conflict because they use a different place to store the settings.

not without an aweful lot of work. the skin engine is very different. you'd have to either bring the skinning engine up to date which means recoding xbmc, or you'd have to redo the skin using the 1.1.0 skin engine and try to get as close as you can. either way, its probably not worth the effort.
in the meantime, you'd be better off just installing ccxgui so you can use xbmsp for streaming from your computer.
Thanks again for the immediate reply and help. I really appreciate your effort. Unfortunately, the ccxgui won't work as my files are all on an external USB drive connected to the network via a fileserver (without a computer involved).
Does it make sense to have both XBMCs installed and open the "older" version from the "latest" release under applications?

the more info on the smb problem the better. but remember this is a community driven project and you cant expect immediate response. first thing, open a bug report on sourceforge.net for tracking purposes. i also suggest you enable full samba debugging (search the wiki manual for "advancedsettings.xml" for info) and include that with the bug report. and be sure to post the entire log, not a snippet.

Thank again for the quick reply. The issues about the LAN attached drive are bad to hear. Actually, the server I am using is from LevelOne and called FPS-3003. It allows 2 USB devices to be attached (one I choose the harddisk to be).

Will need to get hold on a hub and will do so. Currently, there is a switch behind my router which all the three devices are attached to.

An interesting thought. I have mapped the the harddisk on my computer. Unfortunately, I don't know how to share this with the xbox. As my computer is part of a domain, I am also not sure whether this actually works.

Btw, is there also the way to go the other way? I.e., install XBMC 2.1 and then add the part from XBMC 1.1. which allows me to stream over SMB. Would need to know where in the code this is included. Any idea?

not once in this nice long thread have you stated what version of xbmc (date) you are using. nor any detail at all on what your issue is. i've update the samba client 5 times the last 2 months, and fixed issues pretty much everytime.
Thanks for your message. I have tried several releases of the XBMC 2.0.1 release. Namely the Nov17, Nov25 and the Jan01(2007) one.
if you are using the 2.1 release then please try a newer before giving up and going back to 1.1.

Oh and forget about backporting, there are huge amounts of changes, and unless you are a very skilled programmer you won't be able to do it.
no that should be recent enough, could you tell me how it doesn't work? and posting a debug log (hold X, Y on startup of xbmc and watchout for freemem display). then grab the log in xbmc root folder (the old version if you restarted) after having exhibited the problem.
