but for my first tattoo i want to get my initials A K, on my thighs..above my knees so that knee shorts will usually cover it...

with a tattoo artist who said he would not do tattoos that close to the hand. on my ankle (I have 6 total) and out of all of them, the one on my belly hurt

You might as well brand yourself like a cow! You don't need tats to be hot! They give off that dirty girl look. These days, hot girls don't have tats.
I have 14 tattoos including one on each thigh. It was a little painful, but nothing too bad. My arms hurt less, but my ankle tattoo hurt more. It's probably about a 3 or 4 on a scale of 1-10. The pain was definitely tolerable though. Honestly, it was more annoying than anything else.
I am not a fan of people getting their own name/initials tattooed on them. I just don't see the point. Are you going to forget your initials? Why don't you look around at designs, get something that means something you love. And don't just go into a tattoo studio and pick a picture off the wall (AKA flash art). My best friend got a tattoo on his upper thigh and he said the same thing I did when I got one on the back of my neck- it didn't hurt, it was just really annoying.
I personally don't like names or initials as tattoos, but it's your body and you can do whatever you want to it.

getting your initials is fine..
but on your thighs? unless you have 300 tattoos and your running out of place to put them,that seems like bad positioning to me..
However yes being your thigh and having more meat than other places it would be a less painful spot.
It's your skin, and your ink. If you want to find out how irritating a spot will be, just pinch youself on different spots, and the most sensitive places you find, will be the most troublesome spots on which to get ink. Also, the closer to the bone you go, the more vibration you get, and the more discomfort. As far as you getting your initials, it's your skin, your money, and your ink. Take care.
