Or the 1 fish per gallon?
    Why/why not?

(I think they go like that.)

  • Nope, I think it's a piece of crap.

    Imagine a 10" Oscar in a 10 gallon tank.

It only works for fish with a maximum size of 1".

1 fish per gallon is even worse - 10 Oscars in a 10 gallon tank?!?

EDIT: Ladiebug98, your fish must be plotting revenge against you.

  • No, both of these "rules" have done a great deal of harm to the fish hobby.

It's sort of almost true with the smallest tropical fish-- the ones that are about an inch long or less.

But a fish's body mass, and therefore the oxygen requirements and the amount of waste produced, increase with the square of its length. Therefore a 2-inch fish needs four times as much room as a 1-inch fish, not twice as much. A 3-inch fish needs nine times as much room as the 1-inch fish, not three times as much. A four-inch fish needs sixteen times as much room, and a five-inch fish needs twenty-five times as much room, as a 1-inch fish needs. And so on.

Saltwater fish, of course, need much more tank space per gram of fish than comparable freshwater fish need.

And there are many fish that need more space than all this suggests, for various reasons. The most notorious example is goldfish, which are heavy-bodied, messy fish with high oxygen requirements, so they probably need at least 5 gallons per inch of fish.

  • Not at all. It works for no fish.

This was an old way of store clerks allowing you the buyer to judge howmany fish you should keep. Back then in the 1950's and 1960 it was a good way to measure since the basic fish kept at that time were paradise fish, minnows and guppies. Stores that sold these fish used this as a general rule. (although fish keeping goes way beyond that)

This rule tended to apply to these types of fish. These were also great tank fish since they did well in non filtered non heated tanks. Most aquariums were not larger than 10 gallon.

There are many things to consider when housing fish. Larger fish are classified by weight per surface area while others are not. A 32 inch carp or halibut cannot live in a 32 gallon aquarium, but a 32 inch eel can as well as 32 guppies or minnows.

Still yet there are other fish that are able to seem over stocked and yet live fine with more fish in less water. Catfish for one.

Fish like comets, commons and koi also do well in what seems like overstocked conditions as long as the surface area holds the size of the fish.

No 1" of fish doesn't fit all types of fish.

  • 1" of fish per gallon... Absolutely! Otherwise You would have a overcrowded and overly filthy aquarium. Not to mention, the fish would suffer from poor water quality, which can cause many diseases. Stick to the rule!!! One inch of fish per Gallon!

    That's not saying to put a 10"oscar in a 10 gallon tank, it's saying a 3 -10' oscars would work well in a 125 gallon, plus a 10' pleco or two....

  • I am so sick of people misquoting this guideline. It's like taking the right turn on red rule as just that, without the after stopping & yielding to oncoming traffic part.

    The entire guideline, as there are no "rules" in aquatics, goes like this;

"One inch of slim bodied fish, with an adult size of no greater than 3 inches, per gallon of water."

It is a good start for a beginner with a community tank.

One fish per gallon is someone reading the guideline with really poor comprehension.

  • No, I do not personally believe in this rule in terms of singular fishes in an aquarium. Like the other people have rightfully said, a 10" fish in a 10 gallon would not work.

This rule i feel DOES apply to the beginner aquarist who is dealing with small fish, such as platy's, goldfish, tetras, etc. This rule s for those size fish to keep from over stocking. For example: Six 1" inch neon tetras would do grand in a 10 gallon tank minus the room taken up by decorations. See where I am going with this.

The bigger the tank, the less this rule matters. I would only consider this rule by these guidlines.

    RULE APPLIES TO:

up to a 20 gallon tank

and deals with fish strictly of up to only 2-5 inches in length. IM sure most would agree. This is also a more acurate rule for freshwater too, not so much marine fish.

  • For freshwater yes, 1:1
For saltwater definately not! It's 1inch of fish / 2 gallons of water.

  • I agree with answer #1. That really only applies to the smaller fish. The bigger cichlids, cats, or large schools that dart around alot like barbs, tetras, balas, really need more room.

  • in a way i do.. in a way i don't.

right now.. i have 2 fish. a guppy and a mickey mouse fish in a 2 gal tank.

before though, i had 3 goldfish in a 10 gal tank. (people say that's bad because they are really dirty) and they were each about 2-4 in long. but they lasted for 7 years.

so it all depends on how well u keep your tank, and if you have a filter and stuff.

  • both are fake and not real just like Pam Anderson's fun bags

  • not really I have two fish each one inch in a one gallon tank... they are just as happy as ever.

  • The concept of 1 in per gallon of tank has struck much controversy over aquarist everywhere. I believe that in some cases 1in per one gallon can work, for example schooling fish like tetras can be put in a tank that fits 1in of fish for 1 gallon. However, this only works because tetras don't grow large. I believe depending on the circumstances that you should have 1 in for 4-5 gallons. This might be a little excessive, but it depends on how the fish react. The real reason behind the one inch per one gallon is to make sure that the fish is not having stress. However, I believe that fish need a lot of room to not have stress. If a fish does not have enough room it affects their comfort and growth patterns. It all comes down to your fish though....... Some fish can cope with little spaces while other fish can't. Even same species fish, some can live in little spaces others need large spaces, depends on the personality of the fish, wierd I know. I had a .5 inch firemouth, 1 inch midas cichlid, and a 2 inch mangaunese cichlid in a ten gallon tank with the works. For cichlids this is not enough room. However, these fish were comfortable with this much room. I had put enough hiding places for them to have their own cave and they were very happy. They ended up after a couple months nearly doubling their size. This is when I moved them to a 55 gallon, but after a month they died. Some like big places others don;t

  • It's not a religion. You don't believe in it. You either know it's wrong and stupid, or you think it's right. If you had some common sense, you'd see that a 20 inch arrowana doesn't fit in a 20 gallon tank.

For saltwater it's 1:2? Are you stupid? Have fun putting a 20 inch grouper in a 40 gallon tank.

That "rule" is just to keep idiots from putting 1000 fish in a 10 gallon tank.

  • of for fish that are 1 inch if they bigger no
