  • I was just wondering, because I'm considering buying a BMW Motorcycle, do they let you choose between Automatic, Semi-Automatic or Manual? Because I'm absolutely horrible at Manual. And if they don't, can anyone recommend a good Automatic or Semi-Automatic motorcycle for a first timer? By the way, I live in Shanghai, but all the motorcycles here are crap, so I don't want to buy one here.

TRN Recommendation The manual version does require learning to shift with your foot like on a motorcycle though.

  • BMW do not currently make automatic transmission motorcycles, and I hope they never do. Real bikes have gears.

There are some Chinese automatic bikes (Q-Link, CF Moto, Lifan). Honda are also now producing automatic bikes for the Japanese market. Aprilia have an automatic bike coming out next year, and an American company (Ridley) are producing automatic cruiser-style bikes.

I'm going to stick with my lovely manual transmission Kawasaki until I can either afford a new BMW, or electric bikes become a realistic alternative.

  • Check out the Honda DN-01 it is made for Europe, it's also on the Canadian website, but not priced for canada. I don't know about Shanghai.

  • BMW have discontinued their C1, that had CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) which is the closest most motorcycles come to being automatic.

Aprilia makes the Mana, Honda makes the DN01, Yamaha has the FJR1300 (which does require gear changing but has no clutch)

Part of the fun of riding a motorbike is being in charge of the mechanicals, that includes the gearbox, it really isn't hard to learn and improve on your skills. None of the above are ideal for first-timers â “ virtually any scooter would do that â “ but you will restrict yourself to a very small niche by not learning with a proper gearbox. Automatic motorbikes are always heavier than they need to be to cater for automatic changing.
