Engine Break-In: please help?

  • When you're in a busy street where you can't actually work your engine hard by speeding, can you work it hard by keeping high RPMs instead?

Is it better to have a passenger (for more weight, more work for engine) when breaking in?

How many miles/kilometers should breaking in last?

Every what interval should you change oil while breaking in?

Alternating acceleration and deceleration; does that mean using multiple gears at the same speed?
    Or something else?

Are you supposed to use the engine brake often when breaking it in?
Like letting the engine decelerate by itself without applying brakes?
    (My bike is automatic-clutched, BTW)

Is it right to keep the RPM needle right before the red line?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of those ideas?

I'm about to buy a new motorcycle, so I need help! Please post here what I need to know..

Thank you so much! Have a great day! God Bless!

  • take you time if you dont you will hurt the seals and piston you will need to take it easy on the engine so the seals can seat if not you will have oil leaks and maybe some smoke

  • Everything is layed out in the owner's manual...

When I buy a new bike, I usually ask for the owner's manual a day or two in advance so I can familiarize myself with the bike and its break-in procedure before taking delivery.

Anyway. It is very WRONG to keep the rpm near red line. You do NOT want to give your engine high revs until it's broken in.

Most manufacturers permit about 1/2 of maximum revs for the first 500miles/800 kilometers followed by 2/3 of maximum revs until about 750miles/1200 kilometers.

It is better to vary the engine rpm while respecting the above limits and the best way to do this is by changing gears often.

Your oil will have to be changed and the whole bike given a once-over at the 1200kilometer mark.

Having said all this, scooters with automatic clutches use cvt transmissions. On such bikes you have no control over the engine revs and they have very little engine braking.

  • Most new engines need to be babied a bit for the first 500 miles or so, at least when I had my first new bike about 20 years ago. This is to let the new engine wear in a little bit and any tight fits to loosen up. Oil should be changed at the end of the first 500 miles back then, but your owners manual should have the latest information. If not check the manufacturer's website for the best info...
