I have a male betta, when we first set up his tank it was good for about a month everything was clear, no algae or any problems then i noticed he had a lil fin rot going on so i got some stuff to treat that. then i started getting the brown algae and i was told just to keep up with my 25% water changes and the brown will eventually go away but it never did no there is also green algae growing. so i got some of the liquid drops for clearing algae. its been a few days since i treated it and so far nothing. And my poor lil fish seems stressed out he just spends most of the day chilling at the bottom of the tank not swimming that much at all. He is normally not like that at all. But anyway my question is can i do anything here. I have been told not to do a 100% water change. But nothing else is working and I think I'm gonna loose him if i don't do something. Any advise at all will help. Thanks
First off, algae is generally not harmfull to your fish, so make sure you dont kill your fish trying fix the algae problem.
Algae needs two things to grow, light and nutrients. So to control it you should cut down on light and do frequent partial water changes to remove excess nitrate (which acts as a fertiliser)
The fin rot and lack of activity are another problem and generally indicate somethign wrong with the water. You dont mention what sort of filter you have, if you dont have one, get one. Check the temperature of the water, it should be approx 25C(77F). If it's too cold the betta will be less active and more prone to illness. You may also need to do more water changes, especially if the tank has no filter. It could also be a combination if poor water, medication and algae treatment are just getting him down. The liquid drops are basically weed killer, are you sure you want that in your tank?
Some algae is completely normal, it might just be you need an algae scraper?

never do a 100% change. 25 is the best but 50 is still ok. put stress coat in the tank to make his life a little easier. you may wanna look into a filter or a little algae eater depending on tank size. you've tried almost everything so id say these are your best bets. good luck!!! I Hate Goldfish | Five Hens:: My daughter won a goldfish at a party. Free fish, yippee. I told my husband to get her out of the tank before the kids saw her (and because, by this time, After watching for a while, we saw her swim a little bit, so we went into ER mode! I was a mess! Make sure your tank is not near a window because sunlight usually causes a lot of algae to grow. Also, use an algae scraper (can be bought at a petstore) to scrape off the algae.
