Clown fish are damsels so it really doesn't matter which one you get first. Personally I would suggest a yellow tail damsel for starters since they tend to be a lot less expensive. (Then again if cost is a problem use guppies or mollies for the cycle) Yes mollies and guppies can be used to cycle a salt tank. You will need to float them a bit longer than normal but they will adjust to the salt water quickly. (about an hour and a half) Regular damsels then the goby then the clowns. Are you planning on using any live rock? I'd start with it if you are
2 green chromis will fight mercilessly...
in a 20-29 gallon
1- yellow, pink spotted, or diamond watchman goby
1- pair of occelarus clownfish
and 1-2 blue, yellow tail blue, fiji, taupou, or kupang damsel (really anything in the genus Chrysiptera)
along with some hermits, snails, cleaner, and maybe an emerald crab...
would be a fine stocking..
I would start out with some damsels. they are pretty easy to take care of/feed.. etc. once you get used to that branch out! I have a salt water tank and I love it. I currently have one eel and one lion fish.. had 2 damsels, 2 sea urchins, another eel.. salt water tanks are fun.
