My DOCTOR told me we would start cereal at 4 months. However I was at my friends the other day and she was like "you shouldn't start cereals until 6 months because they can develop food allergies."
Of course i will obviously go with my doctor.. but how do you guys feel about this. Where is she getting her information?
When do you start introducing other foods?

  • most doc recommend 6 months because of food allergys. i have already started my 2.5 month old on some fruits and veggies tho. the rice cereal at 1.5 months but not at every feeding just one or two because he was eating up to 8 oz's of formula and it didn't seem to satisfy him at all. your right go with what ur doc syas. all the baby brochures say 6 months thats prob where she got her info. u can tello when the bottle isnt enough for them. like after a full bottle they still act hungry

  • My doctors both said 4 months was fine. It depends on the baby, mine was growing so fast that just formula wasn't enough so we added a cereal feeding to start with. Then we added veggies slowly at 5 months and now at 6 he is eating most flavors that I buy. (I always wondered why there is food out there that says 4 months on the jar/box if you couldn't feed until 6 months.)

  • Your friend is correct, and for that matter rice cereal isn't that great of a first food anyway. It has little nutritional value, real veggies or fruit would be better.

4 months is very old school, and giving food that early can cause allergies.

  • According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:

"Most babies are ready to eat solid foods at 4 to 6 months of age. Before this age instead of swallowing the food, they push their tongues against the spoon or the food. This tongue-pushing reflex is necessary when they are breastfeeding or drinking from a bottle. Most babies stop doing this at about 4 months of age. Energy needs of babies begin to increase around this age as well, making this a good time to introduce solids."

  • i started my son at 4 months and its all on the baby if the baby is ready go for it! alot of babies are on it from a week or so because of acid reflux! its not going to hurt the baby. maybe constipate a little though i started my son on baby food at 4 months old so go for it!

  • I believe it is best to wait until at least 6 months for many reasons, but some children (very few) can be show the signs of being ready for solids at an earlier age. My daughter could handle solids, I think, but I'm still waiting an extra month or so.

  • The recommended age is BETWEEN 4 and 6 months. YOU and your DOCTOR will decide which age is right for YOUR baby because every baby is DIFFERENT. If your doctor says it is okay then I would do it. Obviously he/she is going by what you two have discussed about your son based on his eating habits, weight, etc.

A baby can develop food allergies at ANY time. When you start him/her on fruits and veggies and such you will learn more about what your baby can tolerate.

You and your doctor knows what is best for your baby, not your friend.

  • cereal at 6 months no sooner, most doctors recommend 6 months or older but some old school doctors stick to the 4 months.

  • Don't always assume the doctor gives out perfect advice on everything. They have a lot they have to know and can't possibly be up on everything. Cereal at 4 months is old advice - experts now recommend putting off introducing solids until at least 6 months. This is b/c the sooner you start them, the higher risk of food allergies and obesity. Babies don't NEED cereal. Babies don't need anything besides breastmilk/formula for the first 12 months. They aren't actually getting any nutrition from the cereal, its all about them just learning something new, and that can wait. MANY health organizations recommend that babies be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months, delaying solids.

  • JMK - 4months is very old school!?! wtf?! My son has just turned 6 and when he was born we were told to wean at 4months and that it was fine, its only been the last 4 years if that that theyve bought out the new 6months thing!!

Have a look at any child of 4 plus, they will all of most probably of been weaned at 4months, see any problems? nop[e!

Its silly, if your baby is ready at four months and your doctors happy, go for it!

  • your friend is right, unfortunately many doctors are not up to date with the latest information and advice about infant feeding.
the reason why you should wait AT LEAST until 4 montsh but are better off waiting until 6 months is because SOME TIME BETWEEN 4 and 6 months the babies gut closes up meaning he isnt so prone to allergies and other problems related to early weaining. have a look at this website it explains wonderfully why it is best to wait until 6 months!

  • my doctor said the same thing. I did it twice, then after reading about rice cereal and its lack of nutrients, decided I will just wait til 6 months and then I can skip the whole stupid rice cereal thing altogether.
My friends and ppl online have told me rice cereal is constipating and upsets their stomach, a main reason why I choose not to do it. Plus it's all starchy which isnt good. I heard that a great first food can be avocados smashed and pureed, but at 6 months. so I'm waiting til 6 months then I can start giving her veggies. Your doctor is getting her info from outdated times. It's just standard information, it's not the words of the gods or anything. Even though my baby's pedi said it's fine to give my baby rice cereal now, shes 4 1/2 months, I choose to listen to myself instead. In general, the longer you delay solids, the better. so it's better to start at 6 months than at 4 months. When I was a baby I didnt even have solids til 8 months, and I did fine.
however, that being said, some babies are ready a little earlier. some signs that they're ready are they can sit unassisted well for at least a little while, and they grab for your food literally and try to put it in their mouth. My baby did this the other day, she grabbed a handful of my rice i was eating while holding her, but luckily I took it out of her hands since it was filled with salt. But bc she cant sit very well at all yet unassisted, I am waiting.
