Yes, a girl can get pregnant while she is having her period, though
the chances are less than at most other times of her cycle. According
to the Childbirth by Choice Trust in Canada this can happen "If a
woman ovulates (releases an egg) early and if her period is long, some
fertile mucus could be present during the last days of her period.
Sperm could survive long enough in this mucus to meet the egg."
The fertility cycle goes like this, after a girl's period begins [the
start of her cycle] estrogen and progesterone hormone levels are low.
These increase over the next two weeks and peak at 14 days after her
period beins. At this hormone peak, an egg is realeased and travels
down the fallopian tubes to the uterus. This egg has roughly 12-24
hours to be fertilized before it dies. This is the time when it is
most likely for a woman to get pregnant. You must also keep in mind
that sperm can live for up to 3-5 days inside a woman's body so this
will increase her chances of pregnancy during this ovulation window,
even if you have sex before the egg is released. It is also more
likely that a girl can get pregnant during sex if she is a teenager or
has not been menstruating for a long time because she is more likely
to have irregular periods which can mean the egg is still capable of
getting fertilized even if she is bleeding.
