I have a question as to server sizing. We have a site that currenty shows 175 concurrent users during the day and up to 250+ during the evenings.
It's a sports site so during games it gets even more intense, with game threads typically generating 8000+ thread views in the span of maybe 3-4 hours, though I suspect it would be even more if the site was responsive enough.
Currently hosted on PowerVPS on their Cpanel Power-1 Package, but we're running into significant performance issues (loads of 7, 10, 20, even higher from time to time).
I'm working on getting the info for a server optimization request here, but I just wanted to know am I barking up the wrong tree; can a site of this size be manageable on that hosting? I'm ok with some performance degradation during extreme peak usage (like 10 second page loads or something).

Is it reasonable to expect that VPS hosting can support a forum of this size (possibly with upgrading the VPS package), or am I getting into the realm of requiring dedicated hosting?

VPS hosting is basically still shared hosting... you share server resources with other shared/VPS a/c sites on the server....
load averages are server wide and the load may not be coming from your web site/forum a/c but other a/cs on server.
