Should we always be honest 100% of the time? ?

  • SHould we always be honest 100% of the time, no matter what, in whatever situations? what's your belief based on your religion, moral, background, education, and experience? please enlighten me.

  • If I were completely honest all of the time I would either be in jail or dead, so I'd say no.

  • i try to be honest all the time, sometimes to my detriment. BUT philosophy teaches that there are times when lying is optimal.

  • its good to be honest, it helps make you feel better and live a balanced, true life.
having said that, its a very hard thing to do.
we are often in situations where we are asked to relay stories the asker simply cant hear or benefit from.
speaking our mind in a brutally honest way is also counterproductive.
but if are honest in the right way, all the time is a great way to live

  • Yes but we are mindful we know the heart of others and we know when our needed honesty has the potential to be hurtful. we can find words so that we are never brutally honest but find a kind way to say what has to be said..

  • Lying is considered bad because it often turns out badly for the liar, and almost always for the "victim" of the lie. _Almost_ always.

There are some situations though where lying is the better thing to do. For instance, say you're living in Germany during WWII and you're hiding a Jewish family in your attic. Some SS officers knock on your door and ask if you've seen any Jews in town. In this case, telling the truth could be bad for you and would most certainly be very, very bad for the family in your attic. Lying would not only harm no one in this case, but would serve a great benefit.

  • Whether or not you should be honest should be linked to efforts never to be fraudulent. Being dishonest without intent to defraud (yourself or others) is, frankly, OK. Therefore dishonesty in the forms of tactfulness, protection, and encouragement are OK, while dishonesty in the form of fraud is not.

The trick is to clearly understand one's true motives. Fraud is frequently masked as "protection" when it is actually to breach of confidence.

Fraud, as defined: deceit, trickery, sharp practice, or breach of confidence, perpetrated for profit or to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage.
