I am able to see my PC from XBMC but once I navigate to the folder holding my media content I am locked out due to SMB username and password restrictions. I was wondering if there is a generic username and password that will grant me access or a work around to resolve this security measure? Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Really appreciate the support thus far. I am on a very controlled network and do not necessitate tough security, therefore I have opted for simple file sharing. From a windows folder I selected tools/folder options/view and made sure simple file sharing was selected. After loading up XBMC and navigating through SMB workgroup the folder containing my media still prompts me for a user name and password? Orb:: Orb is a free streaming application for your PC. Does running Media Center Edition have anything to do with it? Any other ideas,
Passwords don't allow access. Read up on file and print sharing and no resolution achieved. On the computer with the shared items, right click on any of the items you're sharing and select 'properties'. If you have a tab for 'security' then click it and make sure 'everyone' is listed in the list of users/groups. Give the 'everyone' account the rights to 'list' and 'read' and apply.
That is the easiest way. Now, go to sharing and click permissions. Make sure 'everyone' has read access. That should take care of everything.
If you don't have a 'security' tab, you're probably using simple file sharing. If that isn't working for you, turn SFS off and try my info here.
In place of everyone, you could probably use 'guest' in both places, but if you take that route, don't forget to go into 'user management' in the management console and remove the check by 'account is disabled' (i think that comes as the default, right?).
If you've got questions, ask away, I'll do what I can to help. I've spent hours getting every little piece of our home network accessible to the multiple xboxes in the house, so hopefully my headaches can spare others some brutality.
