What are steps to isolate/fix the following two problems with an
out-of-warranty HP Deskjet 855C:
#1 Message says "Printer is out of paper. Add more paper."
however, paper IN tray has paper in it. R&R'ed paper tray. Added
paper to
fill tray, still same message. Emptied out half of paper, still same
message.
#2 After fiddling around with the paper feed roller, with the tray
out, the roller locked in the down position. Pressed down on the lever
below the tray and the roller popped back up, but now when the printer
is turned on, the print head slams to the left side and remains there

On some HP printers, there is a thin plastic strip with a black grid
on it that runs the length of the printer behind the cartrage. The
print head uses the marks on this plastic strip to align itself and
figure out where it is located. It is possible that the plastic strip
fell off, or got ripped.
I work for a computer service company and we see this type of thing a
lot and there is usually no easy fix for most of these type of
problems with inkjet printers. Unfortunately most consumer inkjet
printers are not built to last, and getting them fixed by the
manufacturer would probably cost more than your printer is worth. We
generally suggest just picking up a new printer unless it is a really
simple fix. You would be able to buy a printer that has better print
quality and is faster than your HP for less than $100. Or, if you want
to get a printer that will last a long time, you can get a commercial
grade laser printer, which is made to be servicable. I hope this
