Can anyone/everyone help me in knowing what to buy as far as vacuum cleaners go?? I am in desperate need to replace the piece of crap that I currently have and are having a heck of a time doing it, for there are oh I don't know millions of them!!! I have a cat, 2 adults & 3 kids so I definitely live in a "High Traffic Household". Also I need one that comes with a hose (not just the floor sucking kind) and lots of attachments cause I like to go against the wall where the kids get dirt in the corners and the cat gets cat litter. I need as much feedback as I can get as to what I can buy. I would LOVE a Dyson, but I don't have a $1000.00 to spend and more like $200.00 (or less). PLEASE HELP!!!
I recently bought a GE canister vac. The best vaccuum I have ever owned!! I have 3 dogs 2 adults & one teenager plus a hamster 2 mice & a rat(lost of shavings on the floor during cage cleaning time) The hose has an extender it goes completley under tha couch and has 5 attachments. You can turn the brush off to do hard floors and on to do carpets. You can also adjust the suction power to vaccuum area rugs without sucking the whole rug up. The only thing I don't like is that it is not bagless but all the other options and features way outweigh that. It was 150.00 at Walmart... It's definatley worth chaecking out!! Hi, A friend who has pets and kids bought a Eureka boss smart vac ultra 4870 and she loves it. She said it was recommended by a leading consumer magazine and rated right up there with higher priced vacuums. Eureka also rated number 2 for the least amount of repairs. It was priced around 150.00 and really cleans carpets and bare floors with the flick of a switch. Has hepa filtration, 8 carpet settings, convenient tools and ability to control suction when using tools. Hope this helps.

Think of a vacuum cleaner as an investment, not a disposable which is mostly what you get for $200 or less. Would you rather spend more right now for something that really works for you and not have to buy a vacuum again for 10 years or more, or spend $200 now and have to spend it again every couple of years, and in the meantime not having one that does what you need? I have a Filter Queen that I bought used in 1988 for $500. It's had a couple of tune-ups in that time but still works as well as the day I bought it. I also have one called a Ghibli, which is a little more like a shop vac but very quiet and miles better than your basic Sears shop vac(I bought one of those first and it was such a piece of garbage that I returned it), and I'd recommend it highly. Lots of suction, and the quietness is wonderful.

Stay away from uprights. They're okay for carpet, difficult to use for much else. A canister type does much more, better and easier. Go to a store that sells and repairs vacuums. They often have used top-of-the -line stuff for good prices. They know the products the way someone in Wal-Mart never can so they can help you choose something that works for you.
Christmas is coming. Maybe you can say a good vacuum cleaner is your Christmas present. Not as fun as jewellery maybe but every time you use it you'll be glad you spent the money.
There's no need to buy a brand new vacuume.
Lots of people buy newer models of ones they like and sell the old ones in classifieds or craigslist.org.
I've had a kirby G4 (generation 4) and it's been great.
The only downside is you can only buy the bags from a dealer (or rep like at a sewing center or repair shop) or online and they tend to be expensive. It comes with alot of attachments, but to use the hose requires getting down, removing the front metal part and attaching the hose. They usually come with a dvd (or you can probably watch it on their website) that goes over how to take that on and off, and do other things with it like using it for a blower (like to clean your deck of leaves), rug shampoer and upholstery cleaner, and how to remove the bag. They tend to be heavy but last forever.
Any of the "generation" (G) models would probably be fine.
I saw where Target had a Dyson today (Friday) for 349.00 today. Can't remember exactly but the kicker is that you get 100.00 Target gift card if you buy it.
