I have a 55 gal tank with red fin tinfoil barbs, a dragon fish, a catfish, some rainbow sharks, and some guarmies but i dont want to get a pleco that the catfish or any other fish will kill.
One of the smaller ones, like the bristlenose cats.
I hope you are aware that the tinfoil barbs and the rainbow sharks, and possibly the gouramis (I don't know what gourami species you have) are going to grow much too big for a 55-gallon tank. How to Take Care of Plecos | eHow.com:: your pleco catfish pellets that sink to the bottom of the tank and become soft. time and can easily flip themselves out of their container -so put a lid http://www.ehow.com/how_5008118_care-plecos.htmlHOME |
I hope you have plans to get a much bigger tank. Robyns Pleco Care Page:: I have never had more than one pleco at the same time in the same tank. I put two of them together to make a tunnel. He sleeps in there all day. http://www.fishpondinfo.com/fish/plecocare.htmHOME |
I'd recomend a clown pleco.
check out http://www.planetcatfish.com/ they have one of the largest databases on all different breeds. I believe most pleco's will be fine but you have to be careful of which one because they can grow to between 1 and 2 feet long and need a large tank.
I see lots of people saying clown pleco. These guys only get to be 3 inchs males 4 inches. I have a 3 inch female in my 36 Gal tank. They are nice to look at but don't clean the tank and are really shy.
I also have a young bristle nose. She is the best great little cleaner and is always working not at all shy. They get to be 5 inches. The Rubber nose of Bulldog pleco is another cool hard working pleco they get to be about 5 - 6 inches. They are very peaceful.
If you are really good about doing your tank maintenance and don't over stock you could get a larger pleco. Just remember plecos are poop machines.
Plecos are pretty tough I don't think the other fish will kill him. My little clown pleco is the queen of the tank. She does not take crap from the other fish.
In a 55 I would recommend a bristlenose or a clown pleco. Both stay on the small side so should do fine in your with the rainbow sharks. However the dragon fish is a brackish water fish and won't really do well long term in a freshwater tank. Tinfoil barbs get over a foot and are really to large for this tank. Depending on the species of gourami you have they may also outgrow the tank Also by catfish do you mean cories or a channel or redtail catfish. Cories will be fine however chanel and red tail catfish get huge and will not do well long in a tank this size (or any tank it is practical for most people to keep really) They will also eat your other fish when the get large enough
