Now we call them notebook computers. Laptops are the wrong terminology to be used with any of them newer than 15 years old, but some ignorant people use it anyways.
As far as I know, a "laptop" is a netbook or a notebook. A netbook is a small very portable laptop, which is designed more or less soley for internet use, they don't have great memory. A notebook is what you'd think of as a normal laptop.
A laptop and a notebook are usually used for the same thing, but you could differentiate by saying that ("desktop") notebooks are bigger and have more power than laptops. So in a way you might carry both around, however, you would use notebooks preferably on a solid ground like a table. Laptops would be a little smaller and more comfortable to carry around and use just sitting on your lap.

The common size for a laptop would be around 13" to 17", notebook sizes possibly around 15,4" to 19".
A netbook is a very small mobile computer. Its power can't compare to that of laptops and notebooks but because of its size (and the fact that its especially built to be extremely mobile) it's very handy. For example, I think they were the first computers to have SSDs (solid state disks) built in which was a very nice advantage because they don't have any loose mechanical components that could get damaged or impaired in their performance by getting moved around (or dropped :)) too much. Additionally, they have been optimized for internet access.
Their display sizes range between 7" to 10".
Laptops and Notebooks are both the same. A netbook though, is a smaller version of a notebook/laptop used for basic computing tasks such as typing and internet. Hence the name. (NET). Obviously, these computers are less powerful than standard notebooks/laptops.

The terms Laptop and Notebook are fairly synonymous, you can use either one and they are understood as the same thing. The only exception would be the desktop replacements notebooks, those are not normally called Laptops simply because they are too large, hot, or heavy to comfortably have one on your lap.
Netbooks are a scaled down laptop or notebook, modeled for light use and the average user. Such as email, the internet, light processing, or travel. They are not meant for heavy use such as gaming or video editing.
Most Netbooks also go for a more economical market and price range. I would recommend them in place of a Laptop or Notebook unless you want to use the computer for something heavy and need higher specs to accomplish it.
